Jumpstart Poetry in the Secondary School

An invaluable resource for teachers and writers in schools by NAWE member Cliff Yates.

Jumpstart is full of insights into the way writers write, exercises to stimulate new writing, and poems to use as models. It contains a range of contemporary poetry that has been successfully used with young people, and a selection of their responses. It is unique in bringing together work by and for young people, and showing how the gap between the two can be bridged.

Cliff Yates is a poet and teacher whose students are extraordinarily successful at winning competitions for creative writing. He wrote Jumpstart during his time as Poetry Society poet-in-residence. He has worked extensively with teachers and as a creative writing tutor. Henry’s Clock, his first collection, won both the Aldeburgh prize and the Poetry Business book & pamphlet competition.

‘Jumpstart is the best aid to the teaching of poetry since Sandy Brownjohn’s work of the 1980s’ - Gordon Wilson in The Teacher

‘Jumpstart is a classic of its kind: inventive, inspiring and instructive’ - Andrew Motion, Poet Laureate
