Creative Writing

Creative Writing combines the acquisition of the skills essential to the practice of writing with the study of exemplary authors; it gives the chance to experiment with a wide variety of forms, and encourages a critical knowledge of the creative industries. The course will encourage you to be confident, adventurous and constructively self-critical in your creative writing, and teach you to prepare your work for submission to literary agents, publishers, broadcasters, magazines, newspapers and other outlets. Creative Writing may be studied with a range of other subjects combined to make a Joint Honours degree. The School is also home to the University's Writing and Learning Centre.

Modules
Your degree will be in two subjects; You will start by studying both subjects in equal depth, choosing a core 40 credit module in each of your subjects, along with 40 credits drawn either from the two subjects or from other subjects in Year 1; From Year 2 onwards you can choose whether to follow a Joint route or a Major/Minor route (depending on whether or not you want to concentrate more on one subject); Your final award when you graduate will reflect the weighting you have given to your subjects. For example, a joint combination of Creative Writing and English Literature will give you a BA (Hons) Creative Writing and English Literature; a Major/Minor combination of Geography and Sociology will give you a BSc (Hons) Geography with Sociology; You can't study Foundation Degrees as part of a Combined Award. Creative Writing is taught through a mixture of workshops, lectures, presentations and tutorials. Workshops offer you the opportunity to read and discuss each other's work in a supportive, informal and informative atmosphere. Lectures are used to introduce techniques and themes in detail. Tutorials provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work with your tutor on a one-to-one basis. Advanced students may also get the chance to work with industry mentors on project work. We believe that for you to achieve your maximum potential you have to take yourself and your writing seriously, and that the best way to do this is to develop a professional approach. Therefore, wherever appropriate, our modules run to industry standards and adopt industry practices.
