Please note: It is essesntial that applicants for all three posts have excellent communication skills (written and spoken) in both Welsh and English.


Welsh Language Programme Coordinator
(Ty Newydd Writers’ Centre)

Salary: £19,000 - £22,000
Fixed-term position until 30 April 2012

Literature Wales is looking for an individual to develop and promote the Welsh Language programme at Ty Newydd Writers Centre.

The successful applicant will be responsible for developing an exciting and imaginative programme of courses and activities which will provide inspiration for creative writing through the medium of Welsh. Creative writing activities can be conducted within the context of other art forms, such as music, the visual arts, dance and theatre.

In order to develop its audience and to attract new visitors to the centre, the Coordinator will work with a variety of groups, including youth groups, writing for healthcare, writing for business, and literary translation in several languages. Priority will be given to increasing young people’s participation in Ty Newydd courses.

The Coordinator will be required to work closely with Literature Wales staff across the country to develop a national literary programme. The successful candidate will also be required, from time to time, to act as a deputy to the Director of Ty Newydd.


Essential

• The ability to work independently and as part of the Literature Wales team at Ty Newydd
• Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) in both Welsh and English
• A clean and valid driver’s licence
• Knowledge of MS Office programmes and the ability to understand new software and technology
• Experience of managing a budget and activities programmes
• Knowledge of literature in Wales and the arts world in general
• A desire to include as many people as possible in our activities and a willingness to use every possible medium to achieve that aim.
• The ability and willingness to work flexible hours

Desirable

• Experience of creating partnerships across multi-media arts, and other professional fields
• Knowledge of arts sponsorship sources

Salary and terms
£19,000 - £22,000 + (depending on the expertise and experience of the successful candidate.)

Specific hours and terms will be agreed with the successful candidate. The post is based in Ty Newydd.

The successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as possible. A fixed-term contract will be offered until the end of April 2012, and funding, sufficient to extend this term of employment, will be sought following this preliminary period.

Project Manager
(Ty Newydd Writers’ Centre)

Salary: £22,000 - £25,000 per annum
Fixed-term post for two years

As part of a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Literature Wales is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced individual who will be committed to developing a range of projects and initiatives to encourage more diverse participation on writing courses run at Ty Newydd Writers’ Centre, as well as other parts of Wales. These projects will concentrate particularly on those people who feel marginalised in society and those who often are, or feel that they are excluded from arts activities. Target groups include disabled writers, unemployed people, young people excluded from education and school groups from disadvantaged areas.

The successful candidate will be responsible for administrating and developing two of Literature Wales’ key projects at Ty Newydd: Writers in Health and Social Care and Reading from Your Life. Writers in Health and Social Care is a programme of courses designed to help writers work more effectively in health and social care situations. Reading from Your Life is a project to set up bibliotherapy groups in Gwynedd and other parts of north Wales.

The ideal candidate will have experience in working in the arts and be committed to the notion that the arts can be vital tools for wellbeing.

The post will be based at Ty Newydd in Llanystumdwy, Gwynedd and the successful candidate must be able to work confidently and fluently in Welsh and English.

It might be possible for accommodation to be provided in one of the cottages on site at Ty Newydd in return for some “on call” duties.

Working hours and the specific terms of employment will be agreed with the successful candidate.

Principle Duties

• Development and administration of a programme of courses in Writing for Health and Social Care
• Development and administration of a programme of bibliotherapy groups
• Development of a strategy to encourage and enable more disabled, unemployed and ethnic writers to attend courses at Ty Newydd
• Finding grants, sponsorship and other sources of income for these projects

Essential

• The ability to work independently and as part of the Literature Wales team at Ty Newydd
• Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) in both Welsh and English
• An efficient and competent working manner in the office
• A clean and current driving license
• Knowledge of MS Office programmes
• Experience of working in the arts or healthcare sectors
• Experience of managing a budget and a programme of activity

Desirable

• A love of literature and knowledge of contemporary Welsh writing
• Knowledge of funding sources for the arts and experience in gaining project sponsorship

Project Development Officer
(Ty Newydd Writers’ Centre)

Salary: £19,000 per annum
Fixed term post until 30 August 2012

Literature Wales is looking to appoint a lively and competent individual, committed to the development of creative writing opportunities, especially for young people, who has an understanding and enthusiasm for the work of Ty Newydd Writers’ Centre.

The post will involve administrating the schools’ work currently undertaken by the Education Manager (who will be on a period of maternity leave for the duration of this position) and being responsible for marketing the centre’s programmes. The post may also involve taking responsibility for certain other projects.

The post will be based at Ty Newydd and the successful candidate must be able to work confidently and fluently in Welsh and English.

We would like this post to start at the beginning of October or as soon as possible after this.

Main Responsibilities

• Administration of the school courses at Ty Newydd (liaison with schools, teachers, writing tutors, co-ordinating dates)
• Updating Ty Newydd website and relevant sections of the main Literature Wales’ website
• Marketing Ty Newydd’s activities on the website, and through Literature Wales’ social media sites.

Essential

• The ability to work successfully independently without supervision
• To work as part of the Literature Wales team throughout Wales
• Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) in both Welsh and English
• The ability to manage a website and have excellent IT skills
• To work efficiently and competently in the office
• The ability to be flexible in their working hours

Desirable

• Knowledge of literature and contemporary Welsh writing

Salary and Terms: £19,000 per annum

Literature Wales is the National Company for the development of literature in Wales. It is supported by the Arts Council of Wales and Welsh Government.

Ty Newydd Writers’ Centre is part of Literature Wales. The Centre has been recently extensively refurbished and renovated and now has first class facilities and full access for disabled participants. The Centre provides residential creative writing courses in Welsh and English and also organises and is involved in other literary projects throughout Wales and beyond.

Ty Newydd has been a centre for creative writing since 1990, offering courses of high quality to schools, colleges and universities as well as to individuals and specific groups. Courses are designed for people at all levels of experience, from beginners to professionals, and cover a wide subject range. A bursary fund exists to try and ensure that no-one is debarred from a course on financial grounds.
