The University of Hull in collaboration with Hull Libraries is excited to announce the call for entries for the prestigious Hull Literary Prize: Short Story Award. This annual competition celebrates the power of storytelling and aims to highlight both new and established literary talents across the UK.
This year’s theme, ‘Uncharted’, challenges writers to explore the unknown, the unexplored, or the deeply personal in their narrative. The competition is open to all UK-based writers aged 18 and over, offering them a platform to showcase their creativity and unique perspectives. There is no entry fee.
Prize Details:
• Award: The winner of the Hull Literary Prize: Short Story Award will receive £1,000.
• Feedback: The winner will also benefit from editorial feedback from the esteemed creative writing staff at the University of Hull.
• Recognition: The shortlisted and winning entries will be showcased at a high-profile awards event held at Hull Central Library.

Submission Deadline: Entries must be submitted by April 7, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.
• Awards Ceremony: The winner and shortlisted entries will be celebrated at an event on June 5, 2025.
Entries must be original, unpublished short stories written in English, with a maximum of 2,000 words. Submissions are free and should adhere to the competition’s guidelines outlined on our website.
The judging panel for this year’s award includes Dr Caroline Cauchi, Dr Jenny Macleod, Dr Catherine Wynne, and Dr Colin Veach, all distinguished academics from the University of Hull, along with Jessica Leathley from Hull Libraries.
