Luxury fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar is honouring its incredible literary heritage by launching its own short story competition
The prestigious brand, edited by renowned author and journalist, Justine Picardie, is inviting published and novice writers alike to enter a 3,000-word original short story on the subject of ‘Spring’.
The winning entry will be published in the May 2014 issue of Harper’s Bazaar and the chosen author will have the privilege of choosing a prestigious first-edition book from Asprey’s Fine and Rare Books Department to the value of £3,000.
They will also get to enjoy a weeklong retreat at Eilean Shona House, on the 2,000-acre private island off the west coast of Scotland, where JM Barrie wrote his iconic screenplay for Peter Pan.
All submissions are to be sent to shortstory@hapersbazaar.co.uk and entries will close on 13th December 2013.
The theme of inspiring literature is woven throughout the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar with a reprinted Virginia Woolf tale from the Bazaar archives, alongside a fashion piece by contemporary writer Margaret Atwood.
Harper’s Bazaar is also hosting an exclusive literary festival in Mauritius from 7 to 14 November with Oscar winning actress Emma Thompson heading the line-up. The week will feature poetry and book readings, alongside author discussion and a grand gala dinner.
Harper’s Bazaar has an extraordinarily rich literary heritage, with authors including Nancy Mitford, Evelyn Waugh, WH Auden, Virginia Woolf, and Truman Capote having contributed to the magazine in the past. This year, Bazaar has followed on in that great tradition, commissioning a wide variety of writers including Ali Smith, Maggie O’Farrell, and Jeanette Winterson.
Announcing the short story competition in the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Editor-in-Chief, Justine Picardie, said: “Harper’s Bazaar has an incredible literary tradition reaching back to its inaugural issue in 1867. The launch of our Short Story Prize both honours and perpetuates that heritage. We are thrilled to launch the prize in our most comprehensive fashion issue of the year, celebrating both first-class writing and intelligent fashion, and we look forward to revealing the winner early next year.’
