English PEN is seeking a Deputy Director.
We are looking for a dynamic and creative individual to join the team, with a successful track record in arts management and corporate development. The Deputy Director also supports the Director in developing the strategy of the charity and in ensuring its smooth administration. This central role requires commitment and vision in pursuit of English PEN’s goals, and in continuing its success in corporate fundraising and building the charity’s membership.
English PEN promotes the freedom to write and the freedom to read. The founding centre of a worldwide writers’ organisation, established in 1921, it is supported by an active membership of leading writers and literary professionals, with an elected board.
Over the past five years English PEN has tripled in size and impact, with successful campaigns promoting the freedom to read and write in the UK and around the world, as well as new programmes working with prisoners, refugees and other socially excluded groups. Our programme to support great literature in English translation has also recently expanded and we run public events, debates and fundraisers around the year.
Main responsibilities include:
- To identify new revenue streams for English PEN from private sources, particularly corporate sponsorship and individuals.
- To develop existing circle of private and corporate donors and research new fundraising opportunities.
- To grow, develop and engage English PEN’s membership, ensuring diversity of our supporters and high satisfaction via periodic membership surveys.
- To develop new opportunities for public fundraising events, with special attention to high-profile activities that raise funds for English PEN.
- To support the Director in the strategic development of English PEN, contributing to operational and business plans as well as stakeholder management.
- To co-direct, with the Director, communications plans and media relationships, keeping English PEN’s media profile high.
- To line-manage the Events and Development Officer and the Membership Secretary/Administrator.
- To participate in the Management Committee of English PEN and the Senior Management Team.

- Outstanding communication skills, both in writing and verbally.
- Understanding of the issues affecting English PEN and its stakeholders in the literature and free speech sectors.

- Ability to deputise for the Director, both internally and externally.
- First class project management skills gained in a complex environment.
