Dancing Bear Books: Call for Short Story Submissions
Deadline: Mon 1 Jul 2019
We're looking for previously unpublished short stories between 7,500 - 10,000 words. We will, however, consider work under the length of 7,500 if it suits our anthology of work so feel free to send along. All work MUST be fairytale/fantasy themed Short stories/poetry.
We'd love to hear from: Debut Authors & Emerging Writers/Authors, BAME Writers, Working Class Writers, LGBT+ Writers.
You can submit anything, but here is a little wishlist our editors put together:
An interesting retelling of a classical Fairytale. This might include an interesting twist or angle on the original story.
Don't be scared to explore subtexts of current affairs. We're really interested in the subtle use of social politics, environmental issues, animal rights etc...
Something cultural. For example, if you come from a different background, include that inside the fairytale narrative.
An LGBT love story but on the background of something classical. For example, The Princess Bride but with a little more diversity.
Something set through the perspective of a child. Think Magic Faraway Tree and Alice in Wonderland.
Anything remotely like Stardust (we love you Neil Gaiman), be creative and come up with new and interesting Fairytale concepts.
POC Protagonists.
Stories exploring Mental Illness and Disability
We are particularly keen on reading Young Adult and New Adult work.
