The Word Factory: Writing Slant # 3: Translating Life with Cathy Galvin
Fri 14 Jun 2024 to Fri 12 Jul 2024
This exciting new online course, run by Word Factory Director Cathy Galvin, is aimed at writers looking for an opportunity to develop new work within a small group.
Cultural translation theorists argue that the act of writing is inherently a process of translation, carrying our thoughts and influences across language, time and place. That process inevitably transforms us.
Using that theory as a starting point, this course will offer a regular space to focus on your own writing, from within your own life and beyond. Cathy will be using poetry, memoir and the short story form to stimulate your ideas.
The five one and a half hour online sessions offer a variety of exercises and reflections to inspire your creativity. Numbers are kept deliberately small - 12 maximum - to retain Word Factory’s trademark friendliness and intimacy.
How It Will Work
Writers will participate in five consecutive weekly morning sessions running on Friday mornings from 14 June to 12 July. Cathy will be offering shared writing time, reading resources and writing exercises. An opportunity to read work together will be offered at the end of the course subject to mutual agreement. Individual critiquing opportunities will be made available at the end of the course.
Cathy Galvin is a poet, editor and journalist. As a champion of the short story form she has founded the Word Factory, co-founded the Word Factory Apprentice Award and the Sunday Times Short Story Award. Her poetry focusses on psycho-geographic journeys within familial landscapes. She has published three pamphlets with Melos & Guillemot Press and is currently completing a new collection as a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Her awards include a Hawthornden Fellowship and a DYCP grant from Arts Council England. She welcomes the chance to work with writers in any genre.
