New Writing South: From Scene to Song with Suhayla El-Bushra
Tue 4 Mar 2025 to Tue 4 Mar 2025
We will spend the session exploring how to begin writing lyrics for a musical number. Starting with an existing scene, we will look at what makes a good point to ‘lift off’ from; how to tell a story through song; coming up with a catchy hook; and structure. Part of First Tuesday Writers.

Suhayla El-Bushra is a UK based playwright and screenwriter. Her plays include a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Enormous Crocodile (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre), The Long Song (Chichester Festival Theatre), The NW Trilogy (The Kiln) and The Suicide (after Erdman, National Theatre. Her TV work includes Hollyoaks, Becoming Elizabeth and Ackley Bridge, and her feature film, Brides (Neon Films/BFI) is currently in post-production.

First Tuesday Writers is here to keep your writing fresh. Taking place on the first Tuesday of every month, each 90 minute session offers a deep dive into a writer’s creative world – designed to challenge and energise you, and lead you to new creative discoveries.
