After the success of 2020’s all-digital event, NWD21 will take place in classrooms and online, so every young writer has the opportunity to write, create and — in line with this year’s theme — connect. A new exciting writing challenge and a host of resources are in place plus a line-up of well-loved author ambassadors who will be leading the NWD21 festivities on 23 June 2021.
This year’s National Writing Day is on 23 June — only two days after England’s lockdown is set to end. After more than a year of separation, NWD21 is all about connection. We’ll be celebrating the power of creative writing in bringing people together to share their joys, voices and stories.
This National Writing Day, First Story is challenging every young person to #FilltheBox with a piece of creative writing – a poem, a letter, a story – using the theme of connection. Whether it’s in 280 Twitter characters or a Post It sized piece of paper, there’s a space to write for everyone. Click here to find out more, and keep an eye on our website for activity templates and guides.
We are so delighted to have four inspiring authors joining us this National Writing Day. The wonderful Michael Rosen, Kate Clanchy, Karl Nova and Alexandra Sheppard will be sharing their writing prompts and advice for the #FilltheBox challenge, plus reading and responding to the creations of the day.
This year our brilliant partners, including British Library, National Poetry Day and Hachette, have created inclusive, inspiring creative writing resources for young writers, teachers and everyone in between.
