Award-winning novelist and NAWE Patron Beverley Naidoo has a new play for ages 9+ showing at the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon, London, 23 September - 30 October 2004.
Rosa's first steps into her new playground are fraught with more than just first-day nerves. It is 1994, and the doors of Oranje School are open to black children for the first time. But not everyone is happy about the new integration laws - least of all the father of her best friend, Hennie... Can Rosa brave the taunts of her fellow students and succeed? And will her friendship with Hennie survive?
Performing during Black History Month, and celebrating 10 years of democracy in South Africa, The Playground is a powerful story of two young people's courage in a beautiful country once made ugly by injustice. You will leave the theatre with your heart stirred and your mind alive with questions.
