We are very sorry to say that the poet Ann Atkinson has died. She had a brain tumour that was only recently diagnosed.
Ann was one of the writers who contributed to NAWE's formative '
assessment grid' that paved the way for how creative writing is currently adopted as a subject in HE throughout the UK.
Peter Sansom, editor at the Poetry Business, pays tribute:
"We know that very many people share our sense of shock and loss. A gifted, open and generous person, Ann had a particular talent for working with and supporting other writers, and was greatly loved in the poetry world. She edited Staple for several years, organised writing retreats, and often hosted poetry meetings at her lovely house in Grindleford. She had been Peak District Poet Laureate and from 2009-2011 was Derbyshire Poet Laureate, publishing From Matlock to Mamelodi, 5000 Miles of Poetry (available from Derbyshire Leisure & Culture). Ann was a member of our Writing School, whose tributes will be posted on this website in due course. We are proud to have published Ann's pamphlet Drawing Water, and we were looking forward to working with her on a full-length collection. She was at the height of her powers and had much more to write.
"A memorial service is being organised by her daughters, and will take place at 11 am on Tuesday 15 May at the Maynard Arms in Grindleford."
