We are seeking to appoint new Trustees who have the skills and interests to support us to reach the next stage of Commonword's development.
This is an opportunity for individuals looking to contribute to both literature and community development at a time of considerable innovation and change.
Commonword is a writing development organisation based in Manchester, providing opportunities for new and aspiring writers to develop their talent and potential. It is a registered charity. Commonword has its roots in the adult literacy movement and was established in 1977 to campaign for the recognition of working-class writing.
Our mission from the beginning has been to support people from disadvantaged backgrounds to become actively involved in creative writing and literature, as writers, readers, and audiences. We believe strongly that an equitable society needs to recognise and value everyone's experiences and perspectives. We established Cultureword in 1986 to work with black / Global Majority and refugee writers.
We have, since the 80s, prioritised staff and board recruitment from the communities we work with and serve, with a majority of staff and board since then identifying as (one or more) black, LGBQT+, disabled and/or working-class.
We are especially interested in persons with expertise in the following areas:
Community Engagement
Digital
Finance
Young people's writing
