Something is happening to the short story these days, the BBC National Short Story Award in its seventh year, major broadsheets are publishing short stories, Bloomsbury is bringing out five collections this year, plus short story slams, festivals and free newspapers, the list goes on….  What has triggered this resurgence of interest and what kinds of opportunities are becoming available for talented short story writers?

Our panel of short story champions discuss what makes them passionate about the form and what makes a great short story stand out from the crowd. They’ll look at the trends and themes they see emerging, the impact of new forms of publication, whether novel-hugging readers will open their arms to the short story, how the British literary culture/tradition compares to the Irish/American.  Join Helen Garnons-Williams (Editorial Director for Fiction, Bloomsbury Publishing) Tania Hershman (The Short Review), Ted Hodgkinson (Online Editor, Granta) Aasiya Lodhi (Producer, BBC Radio) and Di Speirs (Editor, Readings, BBC Radio 4) for what promises to be a lively discussion.
